Area Society: Aberdeen City

'Exists to assist and promote the study of genealogy and family history based on the North-East corner of Scotland. This area covers the old counties of Aberdeenshire, Banffshire, Kincardineshire and Morayshire ... Regular meetings are held throughout the year, covering many topics of interest to family historians.'

'We suggest that new, and would-be beekeepers, join the Association at any time of the year, and attend the lectures and demonstrations to learn as much as possible about beekeeping before buying their own bees, and get to know other Aberdeenshire beekeepers who may also be able to help and advise ... The Association runs a series of lectures aimed at new or would-be beekeepers (but of interest to everybody) in early spring.'

'The Society meets monthly (second Tuesday of the month) from September to May ... where a talk/presentation is normally given by either a guest speaker or a society member.

'Members of the Society have are wide and varied collecting interests, which include both stamps and postal history. Some members interests are of a general type, whilst others are highly specialised. All are equally welcome. In addition, some of our members have competed successfully at National level ... Meetings are held on Thursday evening at 7.30pm, twice monthly, from September to April.'

'Located in the City of Aberdeen, the Club is a registered charity and is is run by its members for its members. We hold a varied program of events during the Club season from September to April:  * Meet Like Minded People; * Competition Nights; * Instruction * Visiting Lecturers.  During the Summer months we have instruction and practical nights.'

The BSS promotes the study of non-flowering plants and algae, fungi and lichens as well as flowering plants. In this broad scope we are unique among British botanical societies ... Activities include lectures, symposia, field excursions, field projects and an annual Scottish Botanists' Conference (held jointly with the BSBI) for exchange of information between botanists working in different areas.'

'Based in Aberdeen, the Club was founded in 1887 and is the oldest and one of the largest hillwalking and climbing club in Scotland ... Its members have from time to time included a number of climbers of repute, but most are simply hillwalkers with interests ranging from cross-country walks, through more strenuous hillwalking (and unashamed Munro-bagging), to serious rock and ice-climbing ... Indoor Meets usually take the form of a slide presentation, and are held about 6 times a year between September or October and March. All members, and guests, are welcome to come along. Indoor meets are an ideal event to meet Club members if you are interested in finding out more about the Club or other Club events.'

'We’re the largest member organisation in Scotland. As a conservation charity, we’re supported by more than 300,000 members and are funded largely by donations ... There are now 32 National Trust for Scotland Members' Centres, Members' Groups and Friends' Groups throughout Scotland, one in Cambridge and one in London. Members of the National Trust for Scotland can join one or more of the groups, usually on payment of a small annual membership fee ... The Centres give an opportunity to share interests and find out more about the Trust and Scotland's heritage. Most have varied programmes of talks, social events and day outings throughout the year.'

'The purpose of the Scottish Beekeepers Association is to support honey bees and beekeepers and to improve the standard of beekeeping, and to promote honey bee products in Scotland through: * The advancement of education in relation to the craft of beekeeping; * The advancement of the heritage, culture and science of beekeeping ; * The advancement of environmental protection by conservation of the honey bee.'  Over 40 Affiliated Beekeeping Associations support the work of the SBA.

Founded 1933: 'We pride ourselves on being inclusive and welcoming to all who share our interest in the wide range of plants that fall under the scope of the "rock garden" from the tiniest cushion plants to trees ... The SRGC supports local Groups in many parts of Scotland and the North of England and is always open to helping form new groups. The main remit of the SRGC is to spread the word and share the fascination for the plants at every level of expertise catering for all from the absolute beginner and the world’s top professionals at the same time'.

'Groups which meet and converse in the UK and beyond, usually gathering once every month. The event was founded in London, UK by Dr Scott Campbell in 1999, for all those interested in science, history, psychology, philosophy, investigative journalism and how to examine extraordinary claims of all types. A speaker (or number of speakers) is invited each month to present a topic of interest, which is followed by a discussion in a relaxed and friendly pub atmosphere.'
