'Founded in 1885, Melrose Literary Society is the oldest society of its kind in Great Britain. Drawing its members from all over the Borders, the Society presents stimulating talks, discussions and other literary activities in a friendly atmosphere in the Ormiston Institute. Meetings, which are held approximately every two weeks from September to April, are open to non-members for a small donation. The varied programme includes speakers who are well-published authors, academic authorities and well-known personalities, and topics discussed range from novels to drama, poetry, memoirs and biography.'
