'The Society was formed in 1966 to bring together members of the local community and encourage interest in the History, Literature and Archaeology of Alresford and the surrounding areas. It has been instrumental in recording the area’s history and events ... Many of our members have played a pivotal role in the ongoing social and commercial life of our attractive town.' The Society holds monthly meetings 'where a balanced programme of talks and presentations takes place in a friendly atmosphere'.
'It is known that a literary society was formed in Alyth in 1875 and that it replaced a previous society which had ceased to function ... The meetings which are held throughout the winter months are open to all and new members are always welcome ... There has always been a wide range of topics at the meetings with a more literary content in earlier times but the format of the syllabus has remained remarkably similar over the years with talks on popular subjects such as history and travel.'
'Founded in 2004 by a group of Barnes friends to provide a literary focus for members in the local area and beyond. The Society offers stimulating monthly evening events in a friendly atmosphere in the centre of Barnes, when there is an opportunity to hear published authors and other speakers give talks on a wide variety of literary topics. These range from novels to historical writing, drama, crime and contemporary issues. We also enjoy visits to places of interest once or twice a year.'
'Chichester Literary Society, despite its name, is not elitist. If you love books – and learning about writers and their lives – then this Society is for you. With our programme of talks and social events, we aim to promote love of the written word in whatever form it takes, be it prose or verse, the classics or more modern writers. In addition to talks by writers and literary experts, there are two annual social events – a summer party with readings and a Christmas social.'
'It all began with a letter from Foyle’s in January 1947 to the Mayor of Newport, Alderman Reg Tyack, suggesting that Newport might like to follow the example of other towns and organise a literary club ... The first dinner and lecture was held at the Westgate Hotel on the 23rd April 1947; we assume that the date was chosen to coincide with Shakespeare’s birthday. The dinners have continued since then and we now meet about six times a year for our dinner/lectures ... We have had a reputation for providing speakers of distinction to talk on subjects of literary or general artistic interest.'
Wirral Talks 'The Society was founded in 1890 and has met continuously ever since. It is believed to be the oldest society of its kind in the country. It is open for anyone to join, or to attend as a guest ... Members come from various parts of Wirral and beyond. The Society seeks to achieve a good blend of talks and topical debates.'
'Suffolk Book League was founded in 1982 and has introduced a varied programme of novelists, historians, poets, journalists, biographers, MPs and social commentators to speak in Suffolk ... The SBL is a registered charity, the aim of which is to promote, encourage, foster or strengthen by all and every suitable means the habit of reading and the wider and more general distribution of books, by and among all people.'
'The core of the programme is a series of Thursday evening meetings, running from September to April, when talks are given by members or guest speakers. The talks are given on literary topics of general interest – sometimes on a single author or poet; at other times on a specific them. Refreshments are available, followed by questions and discussions which are informal and lively.'
'Founded in 2009 with the aim of presenting high quality talks on literature to local book lovers, offering time to socialise after the talk with refreshment (a glass of wine at evening talks/tea and cake at afternoon talks). Since then its reputation and membership have grown and we are pleased to welcome members and visitors from Oxfordshire and beyond.'
