It exists to promote and develop all aspects of materials science and engineering, geology, mining and associated technologies, mineral and petroleum engineering and extraction metallurgy, as a leading authority in the worldwide materials and mining community.'

'Serves Teesside's scientific community through its wide range of learned society activities and by acting as the professional body for materials scientists and engineers. The CIE is one of the oldest institutions of its kind in the world and has been in continuous existence since it was founded in 1864. We are affiliated to IOM3 and are founder members of the Cleveland Scientific Institution.' Monthly evening meetings, October-May.

'Our main function is to organise meetings in the locality of the East Midlands that provide informative talks on diverse subjects relevant to materials and which contribute to continuing professional development for IOM3 members. Aside from this the talks are of general interest and non members are welcome to attend.'

'The society meets regularly to discuss every aspect of Materials from Ice Cream manufacture to the recent nanotechnology developments! All events ... start at 6.30 pm (unless otherwise stated) with tea and biscuits provided from 6 pm and mostly end with a light buffet. They are open to the public and free of charge.'

'In a normal year the SPRA arranges 7 evening meetings, with invited speakers talking on themes of Materials, Processing, Design and Business. Venues for the evening meetings are varied to make attendance more attractive to members in different geographical areas. Some meetings are sponsored by companies and attendance by non-members is encouraged.' Enquire about attendance.

'The Association has an extensive programme of activities to keep its members abreast of new innovations in the materials world centred on its lecture programme and annual conference. It actively encourages the development of young materials scientists through travel bursaries and prizes for academic achievement. In addition it promotes and assists local science based trusts and museums to ensure the history of science in the Sheffield region is developed ... The Association extends a warm welcome to non-members to all its events.'
