'The Palmerston Forts Society is an educational charity dedicated to the study and preservation of Victorian foritification and associated artillery, in the United Kingdom and worldwide. The Society was formed in 1984 by a group of people enthusiastic about the Victorian fortifications of Portsmouth - which include of course, the Forts on Portsdown Hill, Portsmouth. These, together with the forts surrounding Plymouth, Pembroke, Portland, Dover, Chatham, Medway, and other lesser fortresses, were built on the recommendation of a Royal Commission which reported in 1860. Its findings were supported whole-heartedly by the First Lord of the Treasury, Lord Palmerston, whose name quickly became associated with the Forts and gives us the name for our Society.'
