Open Lectures & Talks
'The Galilean Society aims to promote Science to the General Public. We do this by hosting Free Science talks, held every month, covering all aspects of Science. If you have an interest in science, come and join us in our quest to learn just a little bit more ... All lectures are at the level of "popular science" talks and last about an hour, followed by a brief Question Time where you can put your questions to the speaker. Talks are FREE (voluntary donations of £2 are appreciated to cover venue costs) and all members of the public are welcome to attend.'

'The Galilean Society is a relatively new society founded in 2011 by its current President, Dr. Greg Beekman. Greg explains its founding as follows:

"I had been looking for a general science society for years, but could never find one. The absence of such a society always struck me as odd because I love watching the BBC's Horizon programme and reading the New Scientist magazine, and guessed others must too. Both of these are not specific to a particular field of science, like 'only astronomy' or 'only medicine' for example, but cover a fantastically broad range of science. And that's what I wanted - a society that was essentially a live version of Horizon or New Scientist.

"If such a society existed, I reasoned, it would give us the opportunity not just to pose questions to any invited speaker, but to have a conversation with them. I'm sure I'm not the only person who sees or reads something that blows their mind but perhaps doesn't quite make total sense, and you wish you could go to a lecture on it and then chat to the research scientist about it afterwards, perhaps even over a beer. Not finding such a society, I eventually took the brave step and started one up.

"So far, it's done extraordinarily well."'
